Welcome Rodeo Fans to the 41st Annual Cheney Rodeo – July 10th, 11th and 12th, 2008! I am your Queen, Ashley Erin Benedict. I am 20 years old and have been riding horses and ponies since the age of two. Born and raised in the Spokane area, I was a 2006 graduate of East Valley High School and I will be attending the Community Colleges of Spokane, pursuing a degree in Echo-cardiology. I am fortunate to have been born into a horse crazy family and have learned the ropes of riding along the way. I am currently riding my newest project horse, Abigail. Abby is a five year old Appendix Quarter Horse, which means she is a Quarter type stock horse with Thoroughbred breeding also in her lineage. Abby and I have had many long trail rides together and we continue to train and better ourselves all of the time. She has taught me many things about myself, including patience, perseverance and to never give up on your dreams! I have other horses at home, however Abby will always have a special place in my heart. She brings me the joy and responsibility of horse ownership and the challenges that come with starting a horse right off of the range to riding.
Our family barn is full of fun and excitement on a daily basis. My family has 8 horses and a miniature donkey named Buckaroo. Lil’ Buckaroo is our barn mascot! My other passion is showing horses. I enjoy the diversity of both English and Western disciplines, as well as competing in the wonderful sport of rodeo! I have been barrel racing for about eight years now and I just love the adrenaline that goes with the sport and the excitement when we improve our game. Currently, I am focused on colt starting and lessons for horse crazy children who want to learn how to ride – just like I was and how I continue to be. In 2007, here at the Cheney Rodeo, I had the privilege of participating in the 40th Anniversary Cheney Rodeo Flag Team, proudly carrying our Cheney Rodeo sponsor flags. What a thrill that was!
I am proud to have been a long time friend of the Cheney Rodeo Association and I am very honored to be selected as your 2008 Queen. Rodeo is a deep passion of mine and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! Please join me in cheering the cowboys and cowgirls who choose the freedom and independence of the western way of life that comes with a career in Professional Rodeo. I can’t wait to see you all at the Cheney Rodeo!
